Why LITTERary Journal?
This site has been created to bring awareness to the ongoing problem of litter. Obviously, educating people about how not to litter has fallen by the wayside because I sure find an unusually large amount of it on daily walks with my dog, Homer. I live in a middle class neighborhood in a Midwestern city and am surprised at the amount of litter that I find just on my daily walks with Homer.
My lofty goals are to educate people about litter and to eradicate litter in my neighborhood and beyond. I’ve been passionate about the environment from a very early age. I remember the ‘Crying Indian’ commercial (see video link) and the impact that it made on my life. I despise litterbugs and their “I don’t care” mentality. It bothers me when I see cigarette butts, empty cigarette packs, beer cans, liquor bottles and fast food items littered near schools and the skate park where I live. It irritates me even more to see the scads of litter next to the trash bins positioned within the skate park. I guess kids these days don’t know how to place trash into the bin and that’s where the education part comes in.
It’s up to the rest of us who do know how to properly dispose of our trash – either by recycling it or placing it in a trash container – to lead by example. It’s time to ditch the “I didn’t put it there…It’s not my problem” attitude and just pick it up. I encourage all of you to ‘pick it up’ when you see it – even if it’s just one piece. So, go ahead. Pick it up. You know you want to. You know that it’s good for you. Good for the environment. Besides, litter is just basically free advertising for everything that’s bad for you – fast food, cigarettes, beer, liquor, soda…you get the idea.
I invite you to follow Homer and me on our daily walks to see what kind of litter we pick up in our neighborhood and beyond. I look forward to your comments and suggestions of how to educate and stop litter once and for all. Thanks for visiting my site. I welcome your comments and positive suggestions.
Good work girl! My hat’s off to you. You know I will do my part.
Kristen you are an inspiration – so glad you are a friend of mine – where do you come up with these ideas?? I’m curious – are you also collecting money along the way? I’m sure you are finding plenty of coins as your scour your neighborhoods for litter.
So many ideas. So little time. Hmmm, coins don’t seem to jump out at me. I might see a penny here and there, but one time I found $5.
Tragically, Americans have discarded the American Indian like a styrofoam cup along with that culture’s traditional respect for living in harmony with nature. Many people, to put it bluntly, are pigs. Even in trying to sell their homes today, many never take the time to clean up the scum within their walls. These are the people who think nothing of dumping their trash on public sidewalks. Amazing!
Thank you so much for creating this – it’s very well done. I think KAB would like it too if you want to send them a link. They like to share good ideas with all of the affiliates. Thanks again!
Have you seen this cute dog video yet? I think you will like it.

Happy Earth Day, by the way. You are doing great work for our planet all year round.
Thanks Dawn. Happy Earth Day to you too
Love the blogs. I look over the pics many times to help keep me inspired about my job as a “Litter Retriever”. You and Homer are on my best friends list.
