but is it litter? – jan. 27

Today a co-worker asked me if a banana peel is considered litter? Oddly enough, when I took my afternoon walk, I spotted a banana peel. I consider it litter. Save it for the compost pile. What do you think? Another person asked as a comment on this site whether I thought trash days create more [...]

cups and lids and litter – jan. 26

Yesterday, it was all about cups. So many cups – paper, styrofoam, plastic. The ‘gold standard’ in fast food also lead the way as the ‘gold standard’ in litter. Homer did a good job picking up the cups. We also found plastic bottles, cig packs  and cans, of course (see the bag o’ trash below). [...]

ho ho ho and two empty bottles of vodka – jan. 23

I don’t even know where to begin with this post. Cans? Bottles? Overall litter crap? A road trip to Lawrence? Well let me start with cans. Today, I hit an all time record picking up a total of 37 cans (26 beer, 11 soda) on a 55 minute walk with Homer. 37 CANS! The ‘king [...]

this litter is no laughing matter – jan. 21

I have to say that I’m very troubled by a scene in the new movie Leap Year. I haven’t seen the movie, but have seen the preview. Now let me tell you what bothers me about this movie. There’s a scene where the two main characters are driving along the countryside, in Ireland I believe, [...]

battle of the plain old litter – jan. 18

Whoa! Check out this batch of litter picked up on my walk with Homer this afternoon. This was all found on our 2.26 mile walk on the streets right by my house. A new can collecting record was set (16) as well as some new finds, one favorite being part of a birthday tiara. So [...]

battle of the fast food litter – jan. 18

Here’s a wrap up of the weekend litter report. Saturday’s walk in the fog was interesting. Besides seeing lots and lots of fast food litter (and other various crap), Homer bolted while we were playing. It was like he was swallowed up by the fog. Luckily, I found him in a nearby yard…eating birdseed. Now, [...]

cans, bottles and…a tire? – jan. 15

Yesterday, Homer and I walked down a street in our neighborhood that we hadn’t been down in a while.  It was the day after trash pick up and there was a considerable amount of litter up and down the street. On one of the corners, there were four trash cans that hadn’t been moved back [...]

‘unimaginable devastation’ – jan. 14

That’s what the headline read in today’s paper referring to the earthquake in Haiti. My tiny little litter blog seems pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things. I feel very helpless for the thousands of people who died and the many thousands more who are injured. Stopping by the grocery store on my way [...]

no MOre litter is catching on – jan. 13

This morning’s paper mentioned a great program in Missouri called “No MORE Trash! I was so excited to find out about it and to see young people getting involved in litter awareness. Here’s their Litter Pledge: “I promise to do my part to make and keep Missouri litter free. I promise [...]

snow thaw reveals more litter – jan. 11

The thaw is on its way, so I decided to walk up the street for lunch today. Within one short block, I spotted items revealing themselves from the deep cover of snow that’s just now beginning to melt after a few weeks. This block is next to an apartment complex where there are two huge [...]
